That is because, until a few months ago, there was no BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) for Novell GroupWise. The days of GroupWise Administrators having to set up a completely different mail system for Executives just so they could use a BlackBerry are over. Today, Research in Motion announced a $450 million dollar settlement with NTP, a Virginia based patent holding firm with several patents around wireless email technology, that resolves all current and future litigation and grants RIM and its customers the right to continue with its BlackBerry-related business and licenses RIM on all passed, present and future NTP patents.

RIM will pay to NTP US$450 million in final and full settlement of all claims to date against RIM, as well as for a perpetual, fully-paid up license going forward. The amount relates primarily to settlement of past damages, and includes the judgment and money escrowed to date totalling US$137 million (the US$152 million previously accrued included approximately US$15 million in other litigation related fees). It is expected that a substantial portion of the US$313 million, which is the balance of the settlement amount, will be expensed in the fourth quarter, ended February 26, 2005.

Shares in RIM soar as settlement talks with NTP get under way

Shares of Research in Motion (RIMM) shot over 10% higher in the passed two days on speculation that the Ontario, CA based company will settle its patent infringement dispute with Virginia based NTP. The two companies that have been entrenched in a legal battle for several years met in front of a US judge for a settlement conference last Friday. Rumor has it that these settlement talks may have been spurred on by license agreements between NTP and Good Technology, one of RIM’s biggest competitors. In January, counsel for Research in Motion stated that RIM would not settle with NTP and was prepared to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Reasearch in Motion today announced that AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo Instant Messenger, and ICQ will be available on new handheld units and that Yahoo will be available as a free download for exsting units. These services, and others are now available via thrid party applications but the new aggreement will be for actual client software installed on the handheld units that use the networks push email technology for communication.

TORONTO (CP) - California-based Good Technology Inc. said Friday it has agreed to licence five patents from NTP Inc., the U.S. company that claims the rights to key technology used in Research In Motion's BlackBerry products.

Good Technology offers "always on" push email communication services that competes with BlackBerry but offers their services on a variety of handset models by different manufacturers. NTP is the Virginia based holding company that currently is entangled in a legal battle with Research in Motion, claiming that RIM has infringed on several patents around remote email technology that they hold.

The Royal Bank of Canada revoked PIN rights for all of it employees at its brokerage firm who deal directly with clients Wednesday. PIN messaging or Personal Identification Number messaging allows BlackBerry users to send messages directly to other BlackBerry users, bypassing the BlackBerry Server. This poses security issues because of the lack of auditing on these messages. If a user were to delete a PIN message before syncing back to a BlackBerry Server, the message could be lost forever. This could violate many regulatory requirements overseeing electronic communications.

Most of the products found on the site come OEM with BlackBerry Handheld devices, however, they do offer some accessories that don't come in the box with their units such as leather carrying cases and high capcity batteries. We will have to keep checking back to see if their product list grows.

Research in Motion (RIMM) stock was downgraded Monday by Piper Jaffray from "Out Preform" to "Market Preform" and the price target dropped from $100 per share to $75 per share.

RIM's U.S.-traded stock fell $5.10 (U.S.) or 7.58 per cent to $62.22 Monday. In Toronto, shares of RIM fell $6.34 (Canadian) or 7.66 per cent to $76.39. The stock, which has soared 275 per cent in the past three years and is up 25 percent in the past 12 months, has fallen 16 per cent since the start of January. If you are like me, not only do you carry a Blackberry, you carry a traditional PDA as well. Don't get my wrong, I love my 7100t and could not imagine life without it, but, I have also come to rely on many of the applications that run on my Pocket PC that I just cannot find for the BlackBerry. RIM won't settle with NTP

Even though Ontario, CA based Research in Motion has already lost their patent infringement case with Virginia based holding company NTP, they have no plans to settle. In 2001 NTP claimed that RIM infringed upon several of their patents around push email technology and eventually was awarded 54$ million in damages and an injunction preventing RIM from selling there BlackBerry Handhelds and Services in the United States. That injunction was stayed and a higher court actually overturned the $54 million in damages but did uphold that RIM infringed upon 11 of 16 patents held by NTP.

Henry Bunsow, an attorney representing Research in Motion, said the company would not settle out of court and is prepared to argue before the U.S. high court.

Although the BlackBerry may be to email what the Ipod is to music, Research in Motion does not want their business to go the way of Apple Computer. The Macintosh once dominated the PC landscape but Apple’s refusal to license their OS to other hardware manufacturers has turned what some still consider to be the best personal computer ever developed to just a novelty in the business world. Although RIM currently dominates the wireless email market, there are estimates that the total market is 35 million users. RIM just went over 2 million users in mid November and all of the other players combined don’t yet have a million users. This means that well over 90% of the market still goes untapped and you can bet that the big dogs want to get a piece of pie. This is why RIM has started licensing their messaging software to third party hardware vendors like Motorola, Nokia, etc. They even have a deal with PalmSource, who currently, is their biggest competitor.

I really liked the app but don't like typing on my keypad so I didn't stick with it. Now that it has been ported to the Blackberry it should be pretty sweet. There is a free trial at PDAapps.
